  Hello from a changed person . I was a very overweight person 1 year ago today. I weight 298lbs at my 46 birthday party and mention to a friend I need to better my

Well, it’s NOT news to us! It has been common knowledge for a long time that obesity has become a huge worldwide problem. Now it’s official. The World Health Organization (WHO) has soured on sugar.

Obesity is a health problem that’s not going away.

Obesity is also a well-known contributing factor to many diseases, and the WHO recently issued a report recommending limiting consumption of added sugar to less than 10 percent of daily calories. The report also recommended eating more grains and less fat -- and exercising more, at least 60 minutes daily.

Today North America is not the only continent with a huge obesity problem. Great Britain and other parts of Europe have seen escalation in obesity. Obesity is even becoming a real problem in countries that formerly focused on malnutrition as their primary health worry.

The relationship between sugar and obesity is not a new one. We all know that almost everyone is eating too much sugar, fat, processed and fast food. We are currently becoming a society of couch potatoes and we need to get much more physical every day.

Unfortunately, all governments do not support the evidence that excessive sugar consumption and obesity are linked. But the truth is obvious. In 1997, North Americans spent more than $60 billion on 59 billion liters of soda alone.

Children drink more soda than milk and school vending machines are placed prominently next to cafeterias. Today’s teens drink at least one to two cans daily, and more than 17 percent of kids are obese, four times that of kids in the 1980s. Soda, juice and fruit drinks are the liquids of choice for children, and health experts fear a rise in the degenerative bone disease osteoporosis due to a subsequent decrease in calcium in the diets of growing children.

Sugar features prominently in most North American children’s diets. Each can of soda contains up to 12 added teaspoons of sugar. Children’s' breakfast cereals are vehicles for sugar. Even formerly healthy brands have all been transformed into vehicles for sugar: Shredded Wheat, Corn Flakes, Cheerios and Rice Krispies now all have sugared versions. How many ways can you say sugar?

High fructose corn syrup is the number one sweetener and the main ingredient in soda after water. Fructose, or fruit sugar, is still just sugar. If it is “natural” is it better? No. It is still sugar.

Brown sugars, honey, molasses, maple syrup and fruit juice concentrate all are sugar. Anything that ends in “ose” is sugar. Maltose... dextrose... fructose... sucrose... yep, all sugars! Sugars contain calories up to five or more calories per gram and have no obvious nutritive value and can cause serious and premature dental decay.

How to lower the sugar in your diet.

To lower the sugar in your diet, read all the food labels on the items you purchase and wish to use. Ingredients are listed in order of prominence. If you are looking for a healthy cereal, make sure the number one ingredient is a grain -- preferably a whole grain, such as whole wheat, whole rye or whole oats. You can see how much added sugar is in a serving. Remember that one-teaspoon of sugar equals four grams, which can equal up to 20 additional calories. Therefore always choose a cereal with as little added sugar as possible.

You control the sugar! Add your own and develop a taste for less. Avoid sodas, juices and fruit juice drinks. Soda is the number one offender and is by far the quickest way of getting empty calories that we know of. Many juices are not always a good alternative. Many have just as much sugar as soda with just a bit of vitamins and minerals and not always enough to make up for the extra calories.

The best advice is to eat your fruit do not drink it. When you eat fruit you gain the benefit of fiber in addition to the other good nutrition. Most fruit drinks are essentially flavored and sugared water with the same calories as soda and contain fewer nutrients, because of processing, than freshly prepared juices. Drink plenty of pure water, some low-fat milk if compatible to your system and/or fortified soymilk.

Sugar: How Much Is Too Much?

What’s the bottom line on sugar? Well, it’s certainly contributing to the expanding “bottoms” of North Americans!
North Americans eat on average more than 180 pounds of sugar a year. That’s too much! Close to 70 percent of adult North Americans and 17 percent of children are overweight. Almost 40 percent of adults are obese, and several North American Health Department leaders have declared obesity an epidemic, directly contributing to nearly 400,000 deaths annually.

When you consider the change in our North American diets, it is no wonder that obesity is such a huge problem. Just stroll down the aisles of any super market or grocery store and find formerly wholesome and nutritious foods transformed into sugary snacks.

Unsweetened and lightly sweetened breakfast cereals such as Shredded Wheat, Cheerios and bran flakes now resemble sugarcoated candy more than healthy breakfast choices. Some cereals now contain more than the equivalent of half a dozen added teaspoons of sugar per serving.
Although low-fat yogurt is a healthy food, and a great source of calcium and protein, it is no nutritional bargain when it is full of sugar-sweetened preserves. How do you feel about schools that sell soda in vending machines and as fountain drinks... when each 12-ounce can contain more than 200 calories or the equivalent of 9 to 12 teaspoons of sugar? Can’t find a soda at school? Skip on down to the closest convenience store outlet or fast food franchise for a super-sized sip... 36-ounce (or more) soft drinks for more than 500 calories!

What about “sugar in the raw?”

If it’s “natural,” is it better? Chemically, sugar is sugar, no matter what form it takes. Brown sugar, maple syrup, honey, molasses, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, sucrose, fructose, levulose (another name for fructose), dextrose, maltose, lactose, dextrin, invert sugar, mammitol, sorbitol and xylitol are all different forms of sugar.
Sugar has about 20 calories per teaspoon but it adds texture and flavor to foods. Eliminate sugar from a recipe and you will change the product’s identifying characteristics. Sugar is not a “bad food,” and “going off” sugar does not mean you will automatically lose weight. But, controlling the amount of sugar you eat means making healthier choices and by including sugar only occasionally.

Does Sugar-Free Mean Calorie-Free?

Sugarless products are not necessarily calorie-free, and may contain any of the other sweeteners named above. Similarly, a product labeled fat-free does not mean that it is calorie-free. On the contrary, there are often just as many calories in fat-free products as the original product. Manufacturers add extra sugar to the recipe to make up for texture lost from taking out the fat.

If you think that “sweetened with fruit juice,” means you are getting a more nutritious product, think again. Fruit juice contains a similar amount of calories as soda; fructose (fruit sugar) is just sugar. Fruit juice does contain some vitamins and minerals, and therefore is a better nutritional value than soda, but drinking juice is a very quick way of getting excess calories. Instead, enjoy a piece of fruit.

How many squeezed whole oranges make a 6-ounce glass of orange juice?

Most people would not eat the three to four large oranges that it would take to make the glass of juice all at once. Mainly because the whole fruit contains a good deal of fiber, which will tend to fill you up faster.

Some Ways to Reduce the Amount of Sugar in Your Diet.

• Read the Nutrition Facts on every label. Four grams equals one teaspoon of sugar; let the amount of total sugar dictate your choice. If your favorite cereal has more than eight grams of added sugar per serving, it is as if you are sprinkling with more than two teaspoons! Take control, and control your added sugar.
• Remember fat-free or sugar-free products are not calorie-free. Read the label for the nutrition facts, calories per serving and grams of sugar per serving.
• Knowledge is power! Know all the different names for sugar. If sugar (in any of its guises) is the first or second ingredient, choose another product. You do not want a product that is mostly sugar, unless you are choosing candy! Even cookies can be healthier when you choose varieties that contain whole grain flour as the first ingredient. Try graham crackers or oatmeal cookies for a treat.
• Avoid sodas, bottled processed fruit drinks and pre-sweetened teas. You are essentially drinking sugar in water. Sparkling water with fresh lemon or lime is refreshing; herbal teas sweetened with a teaspoon of clover honey are delicious for a treat.
• The different departments of health in all North American countries have approved many artificial sweeteners. For example Stevia, Splenda, or sucralose, are made from sugar, and can be used in cooking and baking. These products are up to 600 times sweeter than sugar. Also approved and in use for years are aspartame and saccharine.

Sugar is not a totally “bad food," but you should choose to control the amount you eat! Buy unsweetened cereals, make your own iced tea and add as much sugar as you like. It is your choice! You will still wind up adding less than the manufactured product.

There is another important component to the fiber equation and that is water. Think for a moment about your garbage disposal.
